facebookIt is widely being reported that Facebook is shutting down on March 15th and that all of its servers will be turned off effectively stopping the service and putting an end to the world’s largest social network site. However this is just a rumor that was reported yesterday that Facebook had sent a memo to its top engineers to prepare for the shutdown.

It is unclear where the rumor began but the news was first spotted on the Weekly world news site which quoted statements from Mark Zuckerberg that he was tired of Facebook and that he wants his old life back.

Weekly World news said that users will no longer be able to access their accounts from March 15. CNN was quick to jump on this and emailed Facebook which denied the rumor. In an email reply to CNN, Facebook’s Director of Corporate Communications Larry Yu said the rumor is false. “The answer is no, so please help us put an end to this silliness. We didn’t get the memo about shutting down and there’s lots to do, so we’ll just keep cranking away like always”, he replied.

The Weekly World News quoted Mark Zuckerberg said, “Facebook has gotten out of control and the stress of managing this company has ruined my life.”

However the report started a mild panic where tens of thousands of people started posting their views and emailing Facebook asking them not to shutdown. One Facebook user had posted his status as, “Hope it’s not true, but if it is, we’ll have to accept it.”
