It is being widely reported that Google is testing a web-based service where users can make phone calls using its Gmail service, right from their computers. The new service will allow users to make VoIP calls to any land line or to a mobile phone.

No details were given regarding the technology or the workings behind the new service. The new service has a Google voice based interface and can also host voicemail messages. With this new unnamed service, you can place free calls to US and Canada atleast until the end of 2010. It is being speculated that Google will reveal more information today in its press conference.

Google officially has this report on its blog. You can now call phones using your gmail by clicking here.
